Spotify is a revolutionary program which allows you to listen to music for free, from your computer. All you need to do is search for the track and you’ll be able to listen to it, as quickly as that. On the computer, there is two versions – A free and a paid version. The free version plays audio advertisements every so often, which do get quite annoying. The paid version removes all advertisements.
Currently, there are over 8 million users of Spotify, just in Europe.
They’ve now finally created their iPhone Application version of their system. This allows you to listen to all of the music you want, anywhere you go. The application itself is completely free, but to use it, you have to pay the Spotify membership fee of £10 per month.
From the iPhone version, it has a caching system which can save around 3,000 different songs to your iPhone, depending on the size of your iPhone. This means you can listen to this music even without an internet connection! Of course, you can keep listening to music through your internet connection if you wanted.
There was some thought that this application would be blocked by Apple though. The first reason because it will lower the sales on music in the iTunes store, and two, because O2 (The mobile provider in the UK) disallow the use of constant audio/video streaming as part of their contract with Apple. There has been no problems so far.
Spotify are hoping this will make more people pay for their product. Currently, only 2% of their users are using the paid subscription, which still leaves them with 160,000 users paying £10 a month. Not a bad total.
